We are recruiting an Electrical Engineering Group Leader to lead the electrical teams involved in delivering our large projects like EPAC (Extreme Photonics Applications Centre) and supporting the scientific programme. This is an exciting and diverse role in a dynamic and exciting environment managing wide teams covering design, implementation maintenance and decommissioning. Many systems are bespoke to meet the specific need of the facility and experiments. 

You will have a wide range of experience managing teams with technical experience in some of the following fields:

  • Pulse power systems at 22KV DC 
  • PLC control systems and logic 
  • Motion control systems and hardware 
  • Complex personnel and machine safety systems 
  • Safety with an IOSH or NEBOSH qualification 
  • Software development using modern languages like C# on both Microsoft and Linux platforms.
  • Responsibilities

The Electrical Engineering Group Leader is responsible for the technical and strategic leadership, the development and management of the group and the oversight and prioritisation of the day to day operations of the 30 strong team.

  • This key role is significant to the future of the CLF by: 
  • Leading the Electrical Engineering Group for the operational delivery of the facilities and the experimental programme to ensure world-class science is carried out safely and effectively 
  • Leading the Electrical Engineering Group on development of these facilities or new facilities to maintain the CLF’s status as a world leading provider of such facilities 
  • Providing software controls, motion, vacuum and gas controls, personnel interlock systems and electrical technical input to the strategic development of CLF facilities and capabilities to maintain the CLF’s status as a world leading provider of such facilities 
  • Supporting and overseeing the Electrical Engineering Group input to the work CLF does for external or commercial clients.

Main duties:

  • Leadership and management of the Electrical Engineering Group and reporting to and advising the CLF Engineering Division Head (Band G) in all areas of electrical engineering 
  • Leadership of electrical safety 
  • Leadership and management of projects and operations so that agreed programmes are achieved in a cost effective, efficient and safe manner 
  • Lead the technical development of the Electrical Engineering Group both from a strategic and delivery viewpoint. You will be responsible for analysing failure modes/trends in experiments, instrumentation and technology and translating those needs into development projects proposals 
  • Provide expert electrical engineering input to assist in securing funding for CLF developments i.e. propose and evaluate technical design schemes and options, including cost, staffing and time estimates; risk evaluations, safety issues etc. and to assist in the preparation of specifications, cost estimates and resource requirements for projects across all CLF areas 
  • Manage projects or parts of technical projects and lead the design, procurement, installation and commissioning of major electrical engineering packages for projects across all areas of the CLF 
  • Identify and advise on electrical engineering aspects of opportunities for Knowledge Exchange with industry, and contribute to the development of a balanced programme to optimise the economic impact of the CLF and it’s industrially facing Centre for Advanced
  • Laser Technology and Applications (CALTA) 
  • Provide electrical engineering input to assist international projects that have synergy with the CLF’s programme of work  As a member of STFC’s Senior Management Team, contribute to leadership activities including determining priorities, allocating resources, assessing and formulating policy in response to changes in the business environment, succession planning, staff development, etc.
  • Contacts and Communication
  • You will be expected to work in close collaboration with CLF staff and our UK/international user community. Communication with suppliers and other groups in STFC will also be required.

You will:

  • Provide strategic advice to Senior Management on future developments within the context of CLF strategy 
  • Provide expert technical advice related to the provision of electrical engineering equipment for the programme 
  • Make the case for and negotiate for resources both staff and equipment 
  • Identify and resolve/mitigate major issues in delivery of the programme 
  • Communicate via reports, emails, face to face meetings, seminars and talks to CLF staff, Division Heads, Group Leaders and academic PIs 
  • Discuss operational issues, questions and queries regarding technical support and delivery 
  • Provide information on projects and plans 
  • Discuss the design and specification of new systems and projects 
  • Communicate via reports, face to face meetings, seminars and talks as well as emails phone etc. with other CLF teams, teams in other departments, academic and industrial experimental teams, and suppliers 
  • Process general admin functions, queries over finance of project and grants, HR related issues etc.
